Greece: Migrants Helping Migrants

People who have come here from other places understand better than most what it is like and are offering a helping hand to other more recent arrivals. This is a story you don’t read every day…

The founding members of Melissa, a new network of migrants who live in Greece, did not hold a special council or vote on the issue. They simply asked themselves during a normal conversation one afternoon a couple of weeks ago: “If not us, then who? If we, who are women, mothers and immigrants, don’t give a helping hand to the children of Pedion to Areos, who will?”

They got to work the very next day to provide some relief to the Afghan and Syrian children living among hundreds of refugees in a makeshift camp in the downtown Athens park.

I live here legally and peacefully. I have no reason to leave. You cannot force legal citizens to leave just because you don’t like their opinions.

Greece has to put in place a comprehensive refugee/asylum system before it can receive the 500 million euros of European Union money already approved for the Greek State for immigration. That is the issue. No previous government (for the last 2 decades) has been willing to implement a proper system and millions of euros have been wasted, “lost” or stolen. Time to get a grip I’d say. Perhaps Syriza is willing to finally do the things that are necessary in order to receive that funding AND ensure that it is used correctly. And yes, that does include money for deportations and repatriations in case you were wondering.
