Non-Existent Children

I have posted on the subject of birth certificates for children of immigrants born in Greece several times and the posts prompted some difficult and long discussions that I do not want to revisit. I am not going to link to them but if you are new or interested, you can use the search facility in the sidebar.

I just want to remind everyone that this is still an issue for thousands of children here who do not exist as far as the state is concerned. These children are not allowed to be registered at birth with local authorities so they have no status, no rights and are at risk of being deported at any moment.

At the age of 18, having been born, grown and educated here in Greece, they become “illegal”. At a time when all their friends are making plans for the future, they are faced with the terrible reality that they are now immigrants, foreigners and illegal. They have no claims of a past and they face an uncertain future.

Please consider signing the petition. It is in Greek but here’s what you do: In the top box where it says “?????????????”, you put your name. In the second box where it says” ????????” , you put your employment/profession. Fill in your email in the next box if you have one. Then hit the box underneath which says “?????????!” to submit.

Unfortunately the website is only in Greek at the moment, but I think they are working on an English version very soon. This is an ongoing concern and I will post news, events and actions as I hear about them.

Thank you to Flubberwinkle for the reminder.

It is also possible to have the page machine-translated for you.

For example, this the result of applying “Google Translate” on the page:

    http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.kounia.org/index.php?option=com_facileforms&Itemid=26&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=el&tl=en

By starting from http://translate.google.com: you can translate any other page.

Machine translation sucks big time, but in situations like this it is useful because it lets you have an idea of what it is you are about to sign.

You only need to remember to have faith in the human who wrote the original and to realize that he/she was probably much more neat and eloquent than the machine which translated it.
